John Chayka and Mats Sundin to meet Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, as they lead the team’s front office roles
The Toronto Maple Leafs officially declared on Monday that they have appointed Mats Sundin and John Chayka to lead the front office roles, in order to usher in a new era. The team has hired the duo to restore the team's pride and guide the organization into a new era, after a disappointing run in the NHL this season. According to reports, Mats Sundin has joined the organization as Senior Executive Advisor, Hockey Operations, and John Chayka is the new general manager.
The duo has decided to meet the head coach of the team, Craig Berube, to discuss the coaching situation under his supervision. Previously, Craig Berube also came under scrutiny after Brad Treliving was fired from the team, after the Maple Leafs displayed a disappointing performance, which led to their early exit from the playoffs.
As John Chayka and Mats Sundin have taken over the leadership roles in the Maple Leafs, the focus is directed towards the current coaching situation of the team. Reports suggest that the duo is expected to meet the head coach Craig Berube, in order to assess the team’s direction moving forward. While no decision has been announced, the coaching situation remains uncertain as part of the broader organizational review.
Speaking at the introductory press conference, Chayka stated, "I talked to Craig last night and, look, he's a guy that's a respected leader for over decades in the National Hockey League. He also believes in his coaching style and approach, and thinks that is a tremendous coach for the team, “I think he's a tremendous coach, a Stanley Cup coach, and a good person. We had a conversation, it was brief, we're going to get together later this week with Mats and go through it all," Chayka said.
Chayka further added, “He's been fully here the past few years with the team, so we want to listen and learn and understand his perspective and then go forward from there."
Apart from this, franchise legend Mats Sundin and Chayka have spoken in an optimistic tone about the team’s future. Despite the Leafs finishing near the bottom of the league standings and missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, the 36-year-old executive emphasized that the roster still holds significant untapped potential.
However, Chayka was equally clear that optimism alone will not be enough. The Leafs’ new leadership group is expected to implement systemic changes aimed at improving consistency, accountability, and overall team performance, so that they can bounce back in the upcoming season.
"The optimistic, hopeful side is I really do believe this team has a lot of latent upside. I think a lot of the players underperformed. I think there's a lot of opportunity to get in there and find ways to do a better job with the internal group," the new general manager stated.
Meanwhile, after joining the club, Chayka added, “I’m honoured to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization." He further added in his statement that he looks forward to building a team that is competitive, driven, and relentless.
Again, Mats Sundin said, I am grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization, and city achieve that. Sundin also further added, “My love for the Maple Leafs and the City of Toronto is an important part of who I am and who I will always be.” Moreover, Sundin also expressed his eagerness to work closely with John Chayka, as they both recognize the incredible opportunity and responsibility to win here in Toronto.
