Janet Jones, wife of Wayne Gretzky was once linked to a Gambling Ring scandal

In 2006, Janet Jones, the wife of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, was implicated in a major illegal sports betting operation. The scandal, which centered around former NHL player and Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet, became one of the biggest controversies in professional hockey at the time. While Jones was never charged with any wrongdoing, reports of her alleged involvement in placing large bets sparked widespread media attention.

The investigation revealed that Rick Tocchet, along with New Jersey state trooper James Harney and another accomplice, was running a multimillion-dollar illegal sports betting operation. Authorities alleged that the ring handled bets on football and basketball games, but no evidence suggested that NHL games were involved.

As the case unfolded, reports surfaced that Janet Jones had placed significant wagers through the operation. Some sources claimed she bet as much as $500,000 on various sporting events. However, Janet Jones maintained that she had done nothing illegal, and authorities confirmed that simply placing bets, rather than running or facilitating the operation, was not a crime.

Wayne Gretzky, who was coaching the Phoenix Coyotes at the time, quickly distanced himself from the controversy. He denied any involvement in gambling and defended his wife, stating she had not broken any laws.
"I’m not involved, I wasn’t involved, and I’m not going to be involved," Gretzky told reporters when the scandal broke. His public stance aimed to protect both his personal reputation and his role as one of hockey’s most respected figures.


Rick Tocchet eventually pleaded guilty in 2007 to charges of promoting gambling and conspiracy. He avoided jail time but was sentenced to probation and temporarily banned from NHL-related activities.
Janet Jones was never charged, and authorities made it clear that none of the bettors involved, including other high-profile individuals, had committed crimes. Despite this, the media frenzy surrounding the case put both Jones and Gretzky in an uncomfortable spotlight.
