Jackson Blake is only 21 years young, yet already doing something his daddy couldn't do in his NHL career win in the playoffs. His dad, Jason Blake, played for the NHL 871 times but couldn't make it past the first round in six tries. Jackson Blake in his first year, already has the Carolina Hurricanes moving to the second round against the Washington Capitals.
Jackson Blake makes Jason Blake proud with playoff heroics
Jason Blake is beaming with pride. It's a dream come true to watch his son play, he says. He gets nervous watching Jackson make plays but also gets incredibly pumped up. Jason Blake remembers working hard in the playoffs but never going very far. Now his son is doing what he couldn't.
Jackson Blake has had hockey his whole life. When he was a kid, he saw his dad play for the Ducks and Islanders. He even practiced with the Carolina Hurricanes last year. All of that experience prepared him for this. And even though he's shorter than everybody else on the team, now Jackson seems calm and confident at games.
Jackson Blake gains confidence of coach Rod Brind'Amour and his teammates
In the playoffs, Jackson Blake has five points in nine games, two of which were goals. He even scored a power-play goal in Game 3. He's played on both the first and fourth lines and does fabulous wherever he's put. He's getting more ice time these days than he got in the regular season, and it shows that the coach has more trust in him.
Jackson Blake says that starting on the fourth line helped him acclimate to the NHL speed. As the season went along, he started playing with top players like Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov. His confidence grew more, and now he plays close to 20 minutes per game. He says that he wants to play against the best players and help his team in any way that he can.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour was familiar with Jackson before drafting him onto the team. A family friend had been telling him great things about Jackson Blake since he was a young boy. Jackson's uniqueness, in the coach's view, is his hockey sense. He always seems to know where the puck is going next.
Even as a child, Jackson Blake spent time in the locker room with infamous NHL players. He played with their children and listened in on games with a watchful eye. Because he is now playing in the NHL, he realizes how lucky he was to have grown up with all that.
