An NHL insider has suggested that Mitch Marner is likely to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs, causing speculation that his time with the team may soon come to an end. Marner, a four-time All-Star with 21 goals and 58 assists in 62 games, has been a key player for the franchise since being drafted fourth overall in 2015.

Mitch Marner might soon leave the Maple Leafs

Mitch Marner's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs is becoming more and more uncertain. A recent report from an NHL insider indicates the star winger could be leaving, adding more fuel to the rumor that his time in Toronto could be coming to an end.

Marner has been a cornerstone of the team since being drafted fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. The dynamic playmaker, with 21 goals and 58 assists in 62 games this year, has been a reliable offensive threat. A four-time All-Star, he has crossed the 90-point threshold on several occasions, cementing his place as one of the league's top talents.
Even with his production, Toronto's consistent postseason futility has added fuel to the debate regarding his long-term status with the team. With the team not having made strong playoff pushes, questions about possible roster modifications continue to swell.
On a Sportsnet 590 segment, Leafs analyst JD Bunkis spoke directly about Marner's situation, providing an honest assessment of what the future could hold for the skilled forward.

"If the team’s out early, he's gone no matter what. I think he’s gonna be a goner. I have no faith he’s going to be back. The reality is the Leafs have been trying to get a contract done with this guy all season long,” said Bunkis. “They wanted to get it done.”
The Leafs may have been pressured to sign Marner due to a possible swap for him and Mikko Rantanen, as Rantanen is in the same position as a potential upcoming UFA, according to Bunkis.

Trade rumors are fueled by Mitch Marner's final year of a six-year, $65.3 million deal with an annual cap of $10.9 million. The Leafs have already offered him over $13 million per season, and failure to extend him could result in him losing him in free agency.
