Florida Panthers make calculated move, confident in Seth Jones' fit

Acquiring Seth Jones wasn’t an easy decision for the Florida Panthers. Despite his talent, the team carefully weighed their options before finalizing the trade with Chicago. In exchange for goaltender Spencer Knight, they brought in Jones, who still has five years left on his high-value contract. Panthers GM Bill Zito emphasized that the reigning Stanley Cup champions took their time before making the move.

"Obviously, this isn't a decision made over 10 minutes," Zito said Sunday. "Lots of time and energy and effort and research in all areas of the game, whether it's live scouting, knowing somebody, the analytic side, the coachability. And as we went through it, he just continued to check every box. Those are the kinds of guys we can commit to, and we think that he'll thrive in our environment."

Seth Jones, the 2013 No. 4 pick, will be introduced by the Panthers on Monday and is expected to take a key role on defense. He reunites with former teammate Sergei Bobrovsky. The trade was costly, with Florida covering 74% of Jones’ $9.5M salary and giving up promising goalie Spencer Knight.

Spencer Knight, who openly addressed his OCD struggles, stepped away in 2023 before returning as Bobrovsky’s backup this season. The Panthers highly valued Knight, making the trade decision even tougher for the team.

"It was really very difficult, on so many different levels," Zito said of trading Knight. "You can't imagine. The level of respect we have for Spencer is tremendous. He's a wonderful person. He's a wonderful guy. The guy's a champion. It's really hard. It's not fun on a personal level and it's not fun on a business level, but you have to make hard decisions."

With Tkachuk injured and Knight traded, the Panthers may make more moves before the deadline. They added Seth Jones but still face questions in goal and depth as they push for a playoff run. The next few days could be crucial for their championship hopes.
