Hockey players leave nothing up to their imaginations when it comes to intensity. Ryan Lomberg however took it a notch higher when he brutally savaged the Tampa Bay Lightning with his pre-game comments. The forward went as far as inviting headlines to his candid answer live on television, leaving no stone unturned in the interpretation of the comment. Such unreserved intimation has added fuel to an already blazing fire in an old rivalry, stretching from the Flames in Tampa Bay to the Lightning.
Ryan Lomberg: His Apprehension with Tampa Bay
But Ryan Lomberg has surely seen plenty of intense battles with the Tampa Bay Lightning. After four seasons with the Florida Panthers, he rejoined the Calgary Flames as a free agent, and already by that time, he had met the Lightning thrice in the last four playoff runs. Yes, he had a very valid reason to hold some distaste for the team. His prior playoff memories with the Lightning include falling short in 2021 and again in 2022 before finally slaying that dragon in the playoffs of 2024 on their way to their first Cup.
In addition to the two postseason encounters, Lomberg scrapped twice against Lightning players in the regular season. He upped the ante in the rivalry by scoring last year's overtime, game-winning playoff goal against Tampa Bay, creating a thorn in their side ever since.
In a relatively vehement manner, Lomberg was asked whether he was pleased to be heading back to Florida ahead of the game, to which he replied: "I like the palm trees and the sunshine," he said, glancing at the Lightning players warming up, "but I f------ hate these guys." it scorned the memory of those past-tinged battles and stood for fierce rivalry and ill-disposed sentiments between the two sides.
Fans will identify with Lomberg's comments, impassioning all involved about hockey rivalry. It is the rawest sincerity that reminds hockey fans that it is much about the heart, determination, and refusing to back down as skill.
