In a special South Asian Celebration game, the Edmonton Oilers will add a twist to a night of hockey with South Asian culture's vibrant traditions. The event will take place Tuesday, March 4, at 7:00 PM, as the Oilers battle the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place. The celebration recognizes the growing South Asia influence felt all across Oil Country while advocating for inclusivity and diversity in the sport.
Arjun Atwal: Leading the Charge for South Asian Youths
One of the main driving forces behind this celebration is Arjun Atwal, the Director and Founder of AZ1 Hockey. Having been a South Asian athlete himself, he has a great understanding of the importance of representation in the sport. Since then, Atwal has provided mentorship for South Asian youth through AZ1 Hockey, creating opportunities for them to play the game.

"South Asian night is more than just a game; it’s a celebration of representation, community, and the growing presence of South Asian athletes in hockey," said Atwal. His work of breaking barriers and fostering belonging for aspiring players has positively impacted the community.
The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) ensures that programs like Every Kid Deserves a Shot exist, which empower grassroots organizations such as AZ1 Hockey and South Asian Hockey. Such grassroots groups help abolish disproportionalities caused by financial limitations or other socio-economic backgrounds that prevent children from playing hockey. Myrna Khan, Executive Director of EOCF, stated, "We're working towards a future where kids across Oil Country are supported and inspired by hockey’s transformative power, ensuring every kid has the opportunity to reach their full potential regardless of their background or financial situation."
This will be accompanied by the beat-dancing of the PHF troop, tunes from DJ Scammy D, and an electrifying national anthem rendition by Jasmine Singh. It will shine a spotlight on youth talent, with an on-ice shootout showcasing the skills of kids from AZ1 Hockey and South Asian Hockey.
