Dmitri Voronkov scores in OT as Blue Jackets end losing streak with win over Utah Mammoth
The Columbus Blue Jackets finally broke their losing streak on Sunday night after losing their last four games. The team last won a game when they beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 back on January 4th. But Dmitri Voronkov scored on the power play just 1:01 into overtime to lift Columbus to a 3-2 victory over the Utah Mammoth at Delta Center.
The win provided crucial relief for a Blue Jackets team that desperately needed points after struggling through a difficult stretch. The franchise desperately needed to win this outing if they wanted to preserve their chances of a wildcard playoff spot and Voronkov delivered just that.
Voronkov deflected Zach Werenski's pass from the top of the right circle to end the game. Columbus had the man advantage after Daniil. But was called for tripping Adam Fantilli with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
The overtime power play goal capped a much-needed special teams performance for the Blue Jackets. Columbus went 2-for-3 on the power play after going 0-for-17 in their previous eight games combined.
"When you're not converting on those, it can take a toll over time, right?" forward Charlie Coyle said. "That's huge when we win a hockey game, but that's something we've got to continue to work on and get better at. When our PK's going, when our power play's going, and special teams as a whole are going, it gives us a pretty good chance to win a hockey game."
Coyle also scored for Columbus, tying the game 2-2 at 18:31 of the second period on a power play goal. He found a loose puck behind Vitek Vanecek and tapped it into the net. Mikael Pyyhtia gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead at 2:47 of the first period, beating Vanecek on the blocker side.
Kirill Marchenko added two assists as Columbus improved to 19-19-7 on the season. And for the Columbus fans, this was a victory they desperately needed. The Blue Jackets had gone 0-3-1 in their previous four games, including a demoralizing 4-0 loss at Colorado on Saturday night.
Head coach Dean Evason praised his team for staying together through the adversity. "We talked about it this morning and last night about hopefully getting rewarded for doing the right things and playing the right way and getting those opportunities," Evason said.
But despite this win, the Blue Jackets still sit at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. If they want to have any chance at playing the postseason, they will need to win their upcoming stretch of games. However, with their next two outings against the out-of-form Flames and the Canucks, fans hope a miracle will happen.
