Connor McDavid overtakes Nathan MacKinnon for scoring lead with five-point night in Oilers' overtime Win
Connor McDavid delivered another masterclass performance on Friday night at Rogers Place. The Edmonton Oilers captain posted five points in a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals to overtake Nathan MacKinnon for the NHL scoring lead.
McDavid recorded two goals and three assists to reach 90 points through 53 games. The remarkable total makes him the first player to hit the 90-point plateau this season while extending his lead over MacKinnon in the Art Ross Trophy race.
The performance moved McDavid three points ahead of MacKinnon in the scoring race. The Colorado center sits second with 87 points through 49 games after his own productive night that saw him post multiple points. However, McDavid's five-point outburst proved to be the difference.
The generational talent now leads the league with 32 goals and 58 assists through the first 53 games of the season. This also marks the 10th time in his career that the Oilers captain crossed the 90-point mark in his 11 seasons in the NHL.
With this, he also crossed New York Islanders legend and four-time Stanley Cup winner Mike Bossy. McDavid held the joint second place alongside Bossy with nine consecutive 90-point seasons. The Islanders legend achieved this between 1977-78 and 1985-86.
This display of pure dominance has been even more remarkable considering that McDavid had a pretty slow start to the season, considering his own standards. However, as the season has progressed, the 28-year-old has shown once again why he is called “McJesus.”
The game itself lived up to the hype as two of the league's top offensive teams traded goals throughout the night. Edmonton needed all five of McDavid's points to secure the extra point in the standings. The game also marked the center’s 12th five-point game, the most active players.
The overtime victory improved the Oilers to 33-19-1 on the season as they continue climbing the Western Conference standings. Leon Draisaitl also contributed offensively alongside his captain, giving Washington's defense nightmares all night long.
The NHL acknowledged McDavid's historic achievement with a social media post celebrating him becoming the first player to reach 90 points. The captain shows no signs of slowing down as he chases his sixth Art Ross Trophy and potentially another Hart Trophy as league MVP.
McDavid's pursuit of the scoring title will continue as he looks to separate himself further from MacKinnon over the season's final months.
