Connor Bedard is back in the lineup for the Chicago Blackhawks, and the timing could not be more critical. The young forward, sidelined for 12 games with a right shoulder injury, returned Friday night against the Washington Capitals to roaring applause at the United Center. Bedard’s presence brings renewed energy to a team navigating illness and roster challenges, giving fans and teammates alike a reason to feel optimistic.
“It’s obviously a huge boost. He’s a big part of our team, and he was playing really well before he got injured,” assistant coach Mike Vellucci said. The excitement around Bedard’s return extends beyond fanfare; it’s a strategic advantage for a Blackhawks squad eager to sustain its winning momentum.
Blackhawks’ playoff aspirations revived as Connor Bedard returns amid team-wide health concerns
Connor Bedard’s comeback comes as the Blackhawks deal with multiple absences. Goaltenders Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom, forward Ilya Mikheyev, defenseman Louis Crevier, and forward Sam Lafferty all missed the matchup due to illness. Even coach Jeff Blashill skipped the morning skate, though he returned to the bench for the game. To reinforce the roster, Chicago activated Bedard from injured reserve and recalled defenseman Kevin Korchinski and goaltender Drew Commesso from the AHL.
Korchinski saw his first action with the Blackhawks since April 15, while Commesso made his second
NHL start.
Bedard’s impact on the ice is undeniable. Before his injury, the 20-year-old center had tallied 19 goals and 25 assists in just 31 games, placing him among the league leaders. “I feel good. Obviously it’s no fun kind of waiting and not being able to play. So it’s exciting,” Bedard said. His return coincides with a hot streak for the Blackhawks, who won four straight games heading into the Capitals matchup.
While fellow center Frank Nazar is back on the ice in practice after his own injury, there’s no confirmed timeline for his return. Bedard, meanwhile, is focused on keeping the team rolling. “It’s an exciting time and for us just to keep that rolling and obviously keep stacking wins because every game’s so important,” he said.
The Blackhawks now have their star forward back, and the combination of Bedard’s skill and the team’s recent surge suggests Chicago could be poised for a strong run in the coming weeks.
