Cole Caufield’s third-period scores led Montreal Canadiens to 4-2 win over Buffalo Sabres

The Montreal Canadiens made a statement on the road Saturday night, using a strong third period to fuel a 4-2 comeback win over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center. The win snapped Buffalo’s five-game winning streak, marking a positive turn for the Montreal Canadiens at a crucial point in the NHL season.
Leading the Montreal Canadiens’ comeback was Cole Caufield, who scored two goals in the third period and added an assist, turning a one-goal deficit into a decisive victory. In addition to the scoring, the Canadiens’ special teams play and goaltending also stood out, as they held off a Buffalo Sabres team that had been one of the hottest in the league over the past few weeks.

The Montreal Canadiens scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period when Juraj Slafkovsky took advantage of the power play, releasing a quick shot from the slot after a perfectly placed pass from captain Nick Suzuki. The goal gave the team an early boost, but the Buffalo Sabres continued to apply pressure and eventually shifted the balance of play in its favor.
“It was honestly probably the biggest period of the year, and we knew we had to outplay them, outwork them, and get back in the game,” Caufield said. “Obviously, some key plays out there, some key penalty kills, and [Dobes] was great in net in the third, so great team win.”
The Sabres tied the game in the second period when defenseman Owen Power released a wrist shot through traffic during a delayed penalty. Late in the period, Buffalo took the lead 2-1 when rookie Noah Ostlund scored a power-play one-timer from the slot, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and giving the Sabres the boost they needed going into the third period.
Montreal sealed the win late with an empty-net goal from Oliver Kapanen, ending the game with a disciplined and opportunistic display. Goaltender Jakub Dobes was instrumental in the team's win, making 36 saves and holding off the Buffalo attack in the second period.
