Brad Treliving hints major changes after Maple Leafs’ last playoff collapse

The Toronto Maple Leafs played well in the regular season. But once again, they lost early in the playoffs. General manager Brad Treliving says the team must change. It’s not just about new players. He wants to change how the team thinks and plays under pressure. Toronto hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967. Fans are tired. Treliving knows the team must play better in big games. He says this summer will bring important changes.

Maple Leafs must stay calm during big moments

Treliving says the Maple Leafs must get better “between the ears.” That means they need to stay calm and strong during the biggest games. He gave the Florida Panthers as an example. Florida stays focused and plays their best when it matters most. Toronto lost two big games at home, even though they played well earlier in the series. Treliving said, “Champions are calm when it matters most. That’s what we need to learn.”


The Leafs started strong in the second round. But they let the Panthers come back. They lost Game 7 at home, 6-1. That game hurt Treliving deeply. “That loss is going to stay with me,” he said. He thought the team was ready. But once again, they fell short.

Treliving says the team needs to change its mindset. They need to believe in themselves. They need to be at their best in the hardest games. He said the Panthers have set the bar, and Toronto must catch up.

Roster changes are coming this summer

The Leafs have already started making changes. Brendan Shanahan is no longer the team president. Keith Pelley will now work closely with Treliving and new head coach Craig Berube. The team was built around four-star forwards, but they have not had playoff success.

Marner and Tavares will become free agents on July 1. That means they can sign with other teams. Treliving called Marner a “star,” and said he likes Tavares. But when asked if they will return, he said, “We’ll see.”

Treliving said emotions are high right now. He plans to take a short break before making big decisions. Still, changes are coming. Toronto must find a way to finally win when it matters most.
