Then, during his last two years with the college team, he scored 90 points in 68 games and demonstrated good distribution and a sense of the game. He also contributed to Denver winning the NCAA national championship and regular-season championship in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Although the college numbers have been encouraging, Rizzo has not had as smooth a transition to professional hockey. In his first year with the American Hockey League, the forward had 19 points in 41 matches. He also played in the ECHL, where he scored 22 points in 29 games.

To the Bruins, the purchase is a calculated development process and not an instant solution to the roster. Boston has demonstrated that the city has an aptitude to develop young talent, and Rizzo has a talent for playmaking that can be made more effective with time and experience.
