NFL Players Who Became Sports Commentators: A New Chapter in Their Careers

The reward may come in the form of playing sports or in the NFL as an adult, but it may also pave the way for a career in sports and NFL broadcasting. Many NFL players retire onto the broadcast booth or studio following their careers in the field. The most recent example is Drew Brees, who, after deciding to pursue a career in sports, might become the NBC Sports studio analyst.

Ramiro Romo

Ramiro Romo is a former American expert football quarterback that has played 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football for the Eastern Illinois Panthers and won the Walter Payton Award in 2001. Romo joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2003, leading them to four postseason appearances and Pro Bowl honors. After retiring following the 2016 season due to a preseason back injury, he joined CBS Sports as the network's primary color analyst for its NFL telecasts, replacing Phil Simms, who was shifted into the studio as an analyst for The NFL Today.


Troy Aikman

Troy Kenneth Aikman is a former American professional football quarterback who played for the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League for 12 seasons. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. In addition, Aikman served as an NFL on Fox color commentator from 2001 until 2021, and has worked as a color commentator for Monday Night Football since 2022-the longest tenured announcer pairing in NFL history.

Richard Joseph Gannon
Richard Joseph Gannon is a former American professional football quarterback who played 18 seasons in the NFL. He formerly played with the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders. After injuring his shoulders in the last two seasons, he retired before the 2005 season and then pursued a career in sports broadcasting. He has worked as a sports analyst with CBS until this present 2020 season of the NFL.


Jason Witten

Jason Witten is a former American professional football tight end who had played his seventeen-year career with the Dallas Cowboys. Currently, he is the head football coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. Witten played college football for the University of Tennessee, and during his time in the NFL, was considered one of the greatest tight ends of all time-second in all-time career receptions and receiving yards.
