Travis Hunter has established himself as one of the most versatile players in college football. His rare ability to dominate as both a wide receiver and a cornerback played a pivotal role in securing the prestigious Heisman Trophy last year. However, despite his impressive athleticism, Hunter is widely considered a better cornerback than a wide receiver. But the question remains—could he handle the pressure-packed role of a quarterback? According to Hunter, the answer is yes, at least in an emergency situation.
Could Travis Hunter Play Quarterback If Needed?
During the latest episode of The Travis Hunter Show, Hunter was confronted with a bold fan question: What would he do if an
NFL head coach asked him to start as a quarterback with no prior practice? In true Hunter fashion, his response was filled with unwavering confidence, even though he acknowledged his limitations as a playmaker. “I’d just go out there and play,” he said, showing his fearless approach to the game.

Despite his lack of experience in the position, Hunter’s confidence was rooted in his childhood memories of playing quarterback on the playground. He explained that his strategy would be reminiscent of old-school backyard football. “You know how we used to be when we were little kids? Like, ‘Hey, this is your route right here.’ I’d just draw the routes up on the center—‘You line up here, you go there,’” Hunter said, illustrating his nostalgic yet strategic approach.
He emphasized his ability to read coverages, saying, “If they line up in Cover 2, we know exactly where to attack. I’d just call out the coverage; we already had plays set for that.”
Hunter’s playful confidence did not overshadow his self-awareness. He admitted that his success as a quarterback would heavily depend on his teammates' speed and ability to outrun defenders. Highlighting his arm strength, Hunter remarked, “I can throw the ball a good 80 yards. As long as they can run past 80 yards, we’re good.” His statement showcased his deep-throwing ability but also revealed his limitations in terms of playmaking versatility.
While Hunter’s comments were made in a lighthearted manner, his willingness to step up in any role demonstrates his commitment to his team. Although he is best known for his defensive prowess and offensive agility, his confident outlook on playing quarterback shows his adaptable mindset. Yet, he was quick to acknowledge that taking on such a challenge would be risky, humorously suggesting that not all obstacles are worth facing.
