The upcoming Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans is set to be a spectacle, not just for football fans but also on the political stage, as former President Donald Trump is set to attend the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. A White House official, speaking anonymously, confirmed Trump's plans to the Associated Press and this visit will mark a historic milestone, as Trump will become the first sitting U.S. president to ever attend a Super Bowl.

While presidents have traditionally steered clear of attending the game in person, vice presidents have made appearances in the past. Al Gore watched the Cowboys defeat the Bills in 1994, George H.W. Bush attended in 1982 when the 49ers beat the Bengals, and Spiro Agnew witnessed the Colts' 1971 win over the Cowboys. However, Trump’s presence at the Caesars Superdome will bring an unprecedented level of security, especially following the tragic terror attack on Bourbon Street earlier this year.
The Super Bowl is already classified as a National Special Security Event (NSSE), which requires a full-scale, multi-agency security strategy. With Trump’s attendance, security efforts will be further intensified, with additional personnel from federal, state, and local law enforcement. More than 2,700 officers had already been scheduled for deployment, but officials anticipate even tighter measures. Despite the increased security presence, officials reassured the public that there are no credible threats to the event. "Right now we have no specific credible threats to this event ... which I think should give us all a sense of security," stated Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Trump, who often speaks about his interest in sports, has not explicitly revealed his preference between the Chiefs and the Eagles. However, he hinted at his admiration for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, stating, “I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner.” His connection to the Chiefs runs deeper, as he previously acknowledged the public support he has received from members of the organization, celebrating their AFC Championship win by posting, “Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs... What a GREAT Team, Coach, Quarterback, and virtually everything else, including those fantastic FANS, that voted for me (MAGA!) in record numbers.”
Aside from attending the game, Trump will also be featured in a pre-recorded interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, set to air at 3 p.m. ET. This marks the first time in three years that a U.S. president has agreed to a pregame Super Bowl interview, after President Joe Biden declined to do so in 2023 and 2024.
