This move comes at a pivotal moment. The 49ers are 5-3 but have watched their defensive strength crumble under the weight of injuries. With Nick Bosa sidelined by a torn ACL since Week 3 and pass-rush specialist Bryce Huff battling a hamstring strain, the once-feared San Francisco pressure has suddenly gone silent.

White, Keion White, a 26-year-old and former second-round pick, has the physical build of a defensive line dream: 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, and 34-inch arms. His combination of power and flexibility allows him to line up on the edge or at defensive tackle in passing situations. It’s no surprise the 49ers saw shades of their past successful moves, like adding Arden Key or Charles Omenihu.


White flashed major potential in New England early. He burst onto the 2024 season with four sacks in his first two games, reminding Patriots fans of their glory days of relentless edge pressure. But inconsistency plagued him afterward as his snap count dipped and he fell out of the rotation entirely, culminating in a recent healthy scratch.

A fresh start may be exactly what he needs. He has five sacks and 45 quarterback pressures as recently as last season, a reminder that the upside is real and untapped.

Patriots shift into edge rusher urgency mode as another Bill Belichick-era player exits

For the Patriots, White’s departure adds pressure on a roster already thin at edge rusher. New head coach Mike Vrabel has now moved on from yet another Bill Belichick pick, and sources say New England is actively exploring replacements before the trade deadline. Players like Jaelan Phillips, Dre’Mont Jones, and Arden Key could be on their radar.

Meanwhile, San Francisco gets a much-needed reinforcement, hoping White can help keep their playoff ambitions from wobbling. If he finds that explosiveness again, this low-cost deal could look like one of the smartest bargains of the NFL season.
