"What is $5 million more going to do": Bills’ Josh Allen jokes about giving the team a $5 million 'discount' on his new contract

Josh Allen, the 2024 NFL MVP, has cemented his future with the Buffalo Bills by signing a six-year, $330 million contract extension, with $250 million guaranteed — the largest guaranteed amount in NFL history. This extension places Allen's average annual salary at $55 million, tying him with Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars), and Jordan Love (Green Bay Packers) for the second-highest quarterback salary in the league. However, what makes this deal remarkable is not just the staggering numbers but Allen's decision to leave money on the table despite his market value.

Josh Allen explains why he gave up $5 million in his new Bills deal

As one of the league’s most high-profile quarterbacks, Allen was well-positioned to demand a deal surpassing Dak Prescott’s $60 million annual average value (AAV) with the Dallas Cowboys. Nevertheless, Allen chose to prioritize long-term team success over personal financial gain. His motivation was refreshingly straightforward.

"It’s weird to say this, but what is $5 million more going to do for my life that I can’t already do right now. It’s not that crazy to me," Allen stated during a press conference. His selfless approach reflects his commitment to the Bills’ broader success, recognizing that leaving cap space could help the franchise build a more competitive roster.

Allen’s decision to sign for less becomes even more significant when considering his on-field achievements. Last season, he threw for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns with only six interceptions, earning a 101.4 passer rating while completing 63.6% of his passes. Additionally, he rushed for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. Ironically, despite winning the MVP award, it was the first season since 2019 that Allen didn’t reach the 4,000-yard passing mark. From 2020 to 2023, Allen averaged 4,385 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, and a 96.9 passer rating per season, highlighting his consistency and elite production.

Through seven seasons with the Bills, Allen has already established himself as one of the franchise's all-time greats. He ranks second in Bills history with 195 passing touchdowns and third with 26,434 passing yards. His versatility as a rushing threat is equally impressive, as he’s tied for first in franchise history with 65 career rushing touchdowns and sits fifth with 4,142 rushing yards.

The Bills have benefited immensely from Allen’s leadership, securing five consecutive AFC East titles. In the 2024 playoffs, they defeated the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game — their fourth playoff loss to the Chiefs in five seasons. Allen’s consistent postseason success underscores his value as the centerpiece of the franchise.

Allen’s humility and grounded perspective extend beyond football. His recent engagement to Hollywood star Hailey Steinfeld reflects a fulfilling personal life that complements his professional success. When asked about whether his fiancée would expect a bigger ring after his new contract, Allen joked, "A bigger ring, you said? No, I think she likes the one she’s got." He added, "I’m so grateful for what’s going on in my life and finding the person that I want to share it with. When you have that piece figured out, it seems like everything else kind of comes a little bit easier."

Allen’s decision to forego a record-breaking deal signals his deep-rooted commitment to the Bills’ future. While he could have easily reset the quarterback market, his focus on team success over personal gain reflects his leadership and long-term vision. The Bills have secured a generational talent, and Allen’s selflessness ensures they remain championship contenders for years to come.
