Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed a heart condition that caused him to briefly leave the team's 23-16 Week 6 win over the Denver Broncos. During the Chargers' first offensive series early in the first quarter, Harbaugh was escorted to the locker room by the team's medical staff. Chargers Coach Jim Harbaugh Reveals Irregular Heartbeat Prompted His Brief Exit During Broncos Game

Jim Harbaugh shared details of his condition after the game, explaining, “It's called atrial flutter. I got into an episode.” He was escorted to the locker room during the Chargers' first offensive drive, where medical professionals provided immediate care. Fortunately, the treatment proved effective; his heart rhythm normalized shortly after.

Doctors conducted an electrocardiogram, confirming that his heart had returned to a sinus rhythm. “I said I feel good, so I got back there on the field,” Harbaugh mentioned postgame, reflecting his relief and determination to continue coaching. The seriousness of heart issues was acknowledged, as he noted, “It's the heart, so you take it seriously.”
In Harbaugh's absence, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter stepped in as the interim head coach, ensuring that the team maintained its focus and momentum. Harbaugh's return came just over seven minutes into the first quarter, with the Chargers leading 3-0. He rejoined the action with renewed vigor, guiding the team to a significant lead, which eventually expanded to 23-0 in the second half before the Broncos rallied late in the game.

Despite his prior history with atrial flutter, including episodes during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh emphasized his commitment to health. He revealed that he had undergone an ablation procedure in 1999 and another in 2012 to address similar issues. “Trust the doctors,” he asserted.
The coach's reassuring words post-game were a testament to his resilience. “Everything ended up turning out to be OK,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the prompt medical attention. The team’s overall performance was also highlighted, with Harbaugh noting, “I felt great about that.” His pride in the team’s cohesive effort was evident as he praised their execution across all phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.
