According to the sources, Eagles were caught off guard when Fangio communicated his intention to retire. And team executives reportedly worked quickly to convince him to remain for at least one more season in 2026.

For now, the outlook appears cautiously optimistic. League insiders have suggested that Fangio’s return is leaning positive, but the situation is not entirely settled. The Eagles have not publicly confirmed his status, leaving a degree of uncertainty lingering over the organization.

Eagles reportedly explored backup plans

The seriousness of the situation became clearer when reports surfaced that Philadelphia quietly explored potential replacements. The team is believed to have reached out to former defensive coordinators Jonathan Gannon and Jim Schwartz as contingency options.



Gannon, who previously served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator before taking a head coaching job in Arizona, was among the names considered. Schwartz, another former Eagles defensive play-caller, was also contacted as the team evaluated its options.

Ultimately, those discussions did not materialize into formal negotiations, as Fangio was persuaded to reconsider. But the scramble highlighted just how vulnerable the Eagles’ defensive structure could have become.

It would have been especially bad to lose Fangio because his unit was so important last season. The offense had problems with being inconsistent and getting worse, while the defense stayed one of the team's most stable assets.

Fangio’s scheme provided stability and discipline, helping Philadelphia remain competitive despite broader roster and coaching adjustments. His experience and tactical expertise have long been viewed as pillars of the Eagles’ identity.
