Tom Brady approved as 5% owner of Raiders: NFL anticipates his future role in team operations

As the news of Brady’s approval as a 5% owner spread, the football world began to analyze the broader implications of this move. While many expect Brady's involvement to deepen over time, his current role remains limited by existing NFL bylaws. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, these rules are designed to prevent minority owners from holding official positions within their teams unless they are related to the principal owner. This rule exists to prevent teams from leveraging equity to entice top talent into specific roles.

"NFL bylaws dictate that minority owners cannot be employed (officially, at least) by teams, unless they're related to the principal owner," said Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer. "A rule put in place to prevent teams from using equity to entice people to take jobs with them."

Although Brady's direct involvement with the Raiders’ operations is restricted for now, his influence is expected to grow, potentially reshaping the franchise’s future. Breer pointed out that Brady’s presence could significantly enhance the Raiders' appeal to sponsors, season ticket holders, and potential recruits, including top-tier players. An anonymous NFC executive noted that Brady's potential shift from broadcasting to a hands-on role within the organization might provide him with more satisfaction than his current media commitments. This idea hints that Brady may eventually take on more responsibilities, aligning himself closely with the team’s future.

Interestingly, Brady’s connection to the Raiders predates his ownership. He attended a practice in 2023 when Antonio Pierce and Champ Kelly held interim positions as coach and general manager, respectively. His presence at these practices suggests an underlying interest in the operational side of the franchise, possibly foreshadowing greater involvement in the years to come.

Raiders’ principal owner, Mark Davis, has long envisioned Brady becoming a part of the organization. Reflecting on a failed attempt to acquire Brady during his 2020 free agency, Davis admitted that his desire to bring Brady to the Raiders had always been clear. He explained, “In five or six years when he’s done [at Fox] and he wants to get more involved with the team…he’s the guy that I think can really take this organization into the future.” For now, Brady’s role will be consultative, focusing on off-season activities, but his long-term impact is expected to be profound. Davis plans to involve Brady as much as possible within the constraints of NFL regulations, ensuring that once the rules allow, Brady will take on a more prominent position in guiding the Raiders forward.
