Tom Brady says modern athletes are too soft to handle criticism, accountability: "Why apologize for trying to get the best out of somebody?”

Tom Brady may be done playing football, but he has not softened his views on what it takes to win. The former NFL quarterback has always believed in preparation, accountability, and being honest when performance is not good enough. Recently, he shared those thoughts while talking about what he sees as a growing issue across professional sports.
From Brady’s point of view, the problem is not talent. It is mindset. He believes too many athletes today struggle with criticism and expect coaches to protect feelings instead of pushing for results. That shift, he says, makes it harder for teams to stay disciplined and consistent, no matter the sport.

Tom Brady on why criticism and accountability still matter

Brady made his comments during an appearance on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, which was recorded at the NHL Winter Classic in Miami. The show, hosted by Paul Bissonnette, Ryan Whitney, and Keith Yandle, moved from hockey talk into a broader conversation about leadership and coaching styles.
When Whitney mentioned how teams often look for players’ coaches, only to later want tougher leadership, Brady did not hold back. “But why do we need these coaches that are like... ‘I always point out first like all the mistakes I made,’ and I’m like, ‘Jesus Christ,’” Brady said. Yandle followed up with a short reaction. “Soft?”
Brady agreed with the idea behind it and explained further. “Well, they’re just unwilling to take criticism for lack of performance,” he said. He then questioned why accountability has become so difficult, not just in sports but in everyday life. “Like, why do we allow this with parents? Why do we allow it in schools? Why do we allow it with coaching, where it’s okay to mess up and screw up in front of your teammates because you’re not prepared or you didn’t put the effort in? Why can’t we call people out on that?”
To Brady, pushing players should not come with guilt. “Why do you have to apologize for trying to get the best out of somebody?” he said.
He also spoke about consistency, saying elite performance does not allow room for ups and downs. “That’s what needs to change, and I think that’s swung to a certain point, and now it’s swinging back where... if you want to be a high performer, there are no days (when) you can underperform, or you’re just average. Because if one day is great and the next day sucks, you’re average.”
Brady believes social media has made things worse. He described how teams can fall into blame games after losses. “I mean, how bad is it, teams where, you know, you’re always pointing the finger at somebody else,” he said. “You lose a game, you pick up your phone, you open your social media. Who do we blame for this?” In Brady’s eyes, those opinions should not matter. “These people aren’t involved in your team, right?” he added. “They don’t know.”
Even after retirement, Brady’s message is clear. Winning still requires honesty, responsibility, and the willingness to hear hard truths.
