Houston Texas is trading running back Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings, receiving conditional sixth- and seventh-round draft picks in return, according to NFL Network, with the conditions on those picks not yet disclosed. The addition of Akers to Minnesota's roster strengthens the starting lineup, bolstering Aaron Jones, who suffered a hip injury in a Week 5 win over the Jets. Jones' status for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions remains uncertain, while third-year pro Ty Chandler is also in the running-back rotation.

The Minnesota Vikings have acquired running back Cam Akers from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 conditional sixth-round pick and a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick. This marks the second time Akers has been traded to the Vikings, following his trade to the Los Angeles Rams last year. Akers signed with the Texans over the offseason. Akers' starting quarterback, Akers, has a strong start to the season, accumulating 147 rushing yards and a touchdown in five games. Despite limited touches, he serves as a reliable backup to Joe Mixon.
Starting running back Aaron Jones has started the year strong for the Vikings, accumulating 350 rushing yards and a touchdown on 71 carries.
Despite a hip injury, there are no long-term health concerns. Akers played under Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell for two seasons, where he had one of his best seasons in 2020, posting 625 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings, with a 5-0 start and potential for a Super Bowl, are poised to continue their outstanding season with increased backfield depth.
Akers played college football for the Florida State Seminoles. Akers was first selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent four seasons with the team, including the 2021 season where he tore his Achilles tendon. He returned for the postseason and was a part of the Super Bowl LVI championship team. In 2023, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where another Achilles injury prematurely ended his season.
