The Dallas Cowboys have begun the 2024 season with a disappointing 1-2 record, which in itself might not seem disastrous. However, the nature of their losses has raised concerns. A crushing 44-17 defeat against the New Orleans Saints, followed by a narrow 28-25 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, both at home, has sent shockwaves through the fanbase. Frustrations have mounted, especially toward owner Jerry Jones, who had confidently declared over the summer that this team was poised for a
Super Bowl run.

One of the key moments that fueled discontent was Sunday's game, where the Cowboys' defense was overwhelmed by All-Pro running back Derrick Henry. Henry, who expressed a desire to join the Cowboys during the offseason, ended up dominating the field with 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jones had passed on the opportunity to acquire Henry, citing his price tag as the primary obstacle. This decision seemed to haunt the Cowboys, and Jones found himself explaining his reasoning to the media in the aftermath.
During his weekly interview on 105.3 The Fan, Jones addressed the fans' growing belief that he was the root cause of the Cowboys' current struggles. In response to a question about his role, Jones acknowledged, "That's very fair. It's well known that no decision is ultimately made if I don't approve it... I accept that completely. I don't know how you could look at it otherwise." Despite this admission, Jones defended the team's structure, pointing to the influence of his staff in decision-making and comparing the Cowboys’ potential to top teams like the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, he admitted that the team was in a "soft spot" and needed to overcome it.
Jones has owned the Cowboys since 1989, a period during which they captured three Super Bowl titles in the mid-1990s. Yet, for over two decades, the team has struggled to regain that championship form, with no NFC Championship appearances in the last 20 years. The growing frustration among fans has intensified since last season’s playoff exit against the Green Bay Packers, with many viewing Jones' leadership as the primary obstacle to success.
While the Cowboys possess the talent to turn their season around, further losses could lead to an inevitable reckoning for Jones. If his unwavering confidence in the current roster proves misplaced, the consequences could be felt both on and off the field.
