The Pittsburgh Steelers were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 29-10 on Christmas Day and received criticism for a lacklustre effort from their defense for three straight games. Defensive tackle Cam Heyward himself opened up on what he thinks is the problem. Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, who’s also regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, also addressed the Steelers' loss.
Cam Heyward Gives Blunt Assessment of Steelers' Recent Loses Post Christmas Day Match
Heyward grabbed eyeballs with his brutal assessment of the team. He said, "When 10 guys do their job and one doesn't, we are screwed."
"The last three weeks we played like s---," Heyward said, via ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "Simple as that. I own that. Every player's got [to own that]. Can't squander opportunities—whether it's turnovers, whether it's getting off the field, whether it's scoring touchdowns, it's a multitude of things, and it has reared its big head.”
The team's 10–3 record has turned into 10–6, and now they are second in the AFC North standings post their 34–17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last Saturday. While Heyward’s criticism targeted the defense, as per Former NFL wideout Terrell Owens it could apply on the offense too. Owens slammed Steelers wideout George Pickens for poor routes. Owens replied to Heyward's post on X, "Same on offense as well when you got #14 not running his routes causing INTs."
Despite racking up 50 yards on three receptions, Pickens made a big error during a trip to the red zone. Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson’s first-half interception took points off the board for the Steelers. Post the game, Wilson said he thought that Pickens, who was lined up outside, would run a different route and help carry the safety to free up TE Pat Freiermuth. But Pickens didn’t complete his route and Wilson’s pass was picked off by S Justin Reid.
"Yeah, you know, I think he was going to go vertical, but at the end of the day it can't happen, it’s on me," Wilson said. "I was trying to give Pat [Freiermuth] a chance. He's done a good job for us down in the red zone, and they made a good play."
