It’s been a long six years, but the New England Patriots are back in the Super Bowl. Sunday’s AFC Championship game was a defensive showdown, with the Patriots edging out the Denver Broncos 10-7 in snow-swept Denver. The win not only secured New England’s 12th conference title but also marked a turning point for a team that had struggled through consecutive 4-13 seasons under different head coaches.
Quarterback Drake Maye led a team that relied heavily on defense and his legs to overcome a challenging game environment. “It’s a new team, it’s a new era,” Maye said. “I respect and appreciate what the Patriots dynasty did, and unfortunately they didn’t come out with some wins here, but we changed that narrative and look forward to bringing our best football for [the Super Bowl].”

Drake Maye’s passing stats were modest: 10 completions on 21 attempts for 86 yards- but his mobility proved decisive. Early struggles forced New England to punt on its first four drives, and points were scarce. The offense finally found life in the second quarter when a defensive fumble recovery set up Maye’s 6-yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7.
“It was tough elements for offense, but the defenses were playing great,” Maye said.
“Really just [giving us] a chance to not lose the game and turn the ball over or do something where we’re putting our defense in a bad spot. Our defense showed up every time, time and time again.”
Maye’s scrambling ability continued to shape the game. His 28-yard run early in the third quarter set up the game-winning field goal, and a critical first down on a late third-and-6 play allowed the Patriots to run out the clock in victory formation. “It’s cool,” Maye said. “It’s pretty special. It’s something I won’t forget. Road warriors, 9-0 on the road, playing for this team and finishing in victory formation, I head-bumped Will [Campbell], and that was probably the hardest head bump of my life after I picked up the first down.”
