Stefon Diggs to the New England Patriots? Not everyone thinks it’s a good idea

The New England Patriots need a receiver. Desperately. The only addition they’ve made this offseason is Mack Hollins, which does absolutely nothing for their offense. Most of the top wideouts are already gone, but Stefon Diggs is still on the market.
The Patriots have already met with Diggs. The interest is real. But is he the right move for a team still figuring itself out under head coach Mike Vrabel and rookie quarterback Drake Maye? That’s the real debate.
This isn’t the first time the New England Patriots have considered a receiver with a reputation. When they traded for Randy Moss in 2007, people thought he would never fit into Bill Belichick’s system. It worked. That season, Moss put up 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns, proving talent wins over narratives.
Stefon Diggs is not Randy Moss. But the situation feels familiar.
Diggs is about to enter his 11th season. He’s bounced from the Minnesota Vikings to the Buffalo Bills and now the Houston Texans, leaving behind a string of locker-room drama. Coaches love his work ethic, but the narrative around him? Different story. One coach told ESPN that Diggs “loves football, practices hard and with purpose, and wants to be coached.” That’s not the version of Diggs most people see.
Then there’s the injury. Diggs tore his ACL in October 2023. He’s recovering ahead of schedule, already running at full speed and making cuts, but at 31, an ACL tear isn’t something to ignore.
On paper, he’s still an elite receiver. Since 2020, Diggs has recorded 5,868 receiving yards (sixth in the NFL), 40 touchdowns (seventh), and averaged 79.3 yards per game (ninth). The New England Patriots need numbers like that. They just have to decide if they’re willing to pay for it.
Look at the numbers. The New England Patriots have made 15 moves in free agency—nine on defense, six on offense. Their biggest contracts? Defense.
Mike Vrabel keeps saying he’s being patient, that he won’t reach for a receiver or left tackle. But at some point, patience starts looking like inaction.
They were interested in left tackle Cam Robinson. He signed with the Houston Texans. They had the chance to retain linebacker Christian Elliss. Instead, they signed Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens, making it pretty clear they’re ready to move on.
The Patriots have four draft picks inside the top 100, the most they’ve had since 2020. Maybe that’s where they find their next No. 1 receiver. Maybe Stefon Diggs isn’t part of their plan. But with the way things are shaping up, this offense needs answers. Fast.
