Steelers to hire former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, per report

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to turn a new page in franchise history. According to multiple reports, the Steelers are working toward hiring former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, replacing longtime leader Mike Tomlin.

This move will mark only the fourth head coaching change for Pittsburgh since 1969, underlining how rare and significant this decision is for one of the NFL’s most stable organizations.

Why Mike McCarthy is the right fit for the Steelers

Mike Tomlin stepped down after 19 seasons with the Steelers. A run that included a Super Bowl title, two conference championships, and an unmatched streak of never finishing with a losing record. Still, recent playoff struggles forced the franchise to hit the reset button.



Owner Art Rooney II has made it clear that the Steelers are not entering a rebuild. Their goal is to compete immediately, and McCarthy is seen as a coach who can deliver results quickly.

He is 62 years old right now and brings extensive experience. He has a career head coaching record of 174-112-2 and is one of the few active coaches to have won a Super Bowl. He will become the team’s first head coach with an offensive background since the late 1960s and the first with prior NFL head coaching experience in decades.



During his time in Green Bay, he coached Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. He helped Rodgers develop into a future Hall of Famer. Later, in Dallas he worked closely with Dak Prescott and led the Cowboys to three straight 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023.

For a Steelers team searching for more consistency and creativity on offense, that résumé carries weight. There is also a strong local connection. McCarthy is a Pittsburgh native, born and raised in the city’s Greenfield neighborhood. He coached at the University of Pittsburgh early in his career and has long ties to the region.

Big expectations after years of playoff frustration

While Tomlin never had a losing season, his final years in Pittsburgh were marked by postseason disappointment. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season and last reached the Super Bowl in 2010.



McCarthy will now be tasked with restoring postseason success while protecting the hard-nosed culture that defines the franchise.

His recent run in Dallas ended without deep playoff success, and critics often pointed to late game decisions and playoff exits. Still, Pittsburgh appears to be confident that his experience and leadership can stabilize the team quickly.

With McCarthy expected to take over, attention will turn to his coaching staff and how he plans to shape the offense and defense. Quarterback development will be a top priority, along with fixing a team that has hovered around the playoff bubble in recent years.
