Steelers finalize 3 staff additions with Brian Angelichio as OC while Mike McCarthy’s Aaron Rodgers plan takes shape

The Pittsburgh Steelers are wasting no time turning the page after Mike Tomlin’s departure and the hiring of Mike McCarthy as the new head coach. The organization has quickly started building a staff that reflects McCarthy’s style and comfort level. With Super Bowl LX just days away, Pittsburgh already has three key coaching hires in place, including a new offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and a coach for their defensive staff.

Pittsburgh is bringing in Brian Angelichio, most recently the Minnesota Vikings’ tight ends coach and passing game coordinator. The hire was first reported by Steelers insider Gerry Dulac on X. The other two hires were Joe Whitt Jr. for the assistant head coach position and Shawn Howe as the defensive staff coach.

Gerry Dulac posted on X, writing, “The Steelers have agreed with Vikings TE coach Brian Angelichio to be Mike McCarthy’s offensive coordinator, per sources.” The Vikings won the NFC North with a 13-4 record and reached the playoffs, which adds credibility to Angelichio’s recent work. For Pittsburgh, the fit is obvious, as they have been stuck in the bottom half of the league offensively, and the franchise has been searching for a consistent identity.


Angelichio’s passing-game experience could help stabilize that quickly, especially if Pittsburgh leans into tight end production as a reliable part of the offense. McCarthy also added two familiar and strategic pieces, with Joe Whitt Jr. joining as assistant head coach, according to Tom Pelissero. Whitt was fired by Washington in January 2026 after the Commanders finished last in total defense, but McCarthy’s history with him is extensive.

As fans know, Whitt worked under McCarthy in Green Bay and Dallas, helping the Packers during their Super Bowl XLV run and reaching the playoffs repeatedly across their years together. The Steelers also hired Montana State defensive coordinator Shawn Howe. His teams have been dominant, including a 14-game winning streak and a strong playoff run, which suggests Pittsburgh wants fresh ideas and proven leadership.

Meanwhile, the Aaron Rodgers angle remains fascinating, as Rodgers spent the best years of his career under McCarthy, so a reunion seems logical. However, McCarthy’s interest in bringing back former assistant Frank Cignetti Jr. may complicate things. According to CheeseheadTV’s Aaron Nagler, that past decision did not sit well with Rodgers, and it could influence what happens next in Pittsburgh.
