The University of Michigan released documents from former head coach Sherrone Moore’s personnel file after News Channel 3’s FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] request. Moore was terminated the same day he was arrested: Dec. 10. He was arrested only hours after the University fired him.
Moore was arrested for felony third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanors: stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering. He was released from jail on Dec. 12 after posting a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 22.
Inappropriate relationship with staff member and dishonesty during investigation
The termination letter supposedly states that Moore and the Michigan University Director discussed the matter on Dec. 10. The termination for cause was effective immediately.
After receiving hotline tips alleging an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, the University thoroughly investigated Moore’s conduct. The investigation found the following violations:
Inappropriate Relationship with Staff MemberMoore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct violates morality, public decency, and, in the University’s reasonable judgment, could harm its reputation. It also violates University policies on misconduct and Supervisor-Employee Relationships, which is defined as serious misconduct.
Supposed simpler terms:
Moore entered into a prohibited relationship with a University staff member. This behavior is widely seen as immoral, indecent, and harmful to the University’s reputation. This behavior breaches the University’s strict policies on serious misconduct and supervisor-employee relationships.Dishonesty During InvestigationMoore provided untruthful statements during investigative interviews regarding this matter. This conduct violates fraud or dishonesty in performing any duties or responsibilities under the contract, including during investigations.
Supposed simpler terms:
Moore lied during the investigation, directly breaching the specific rule for dishonesty and untruthful statements in his contract.Sherrone Moore is not eligible for rehire at the University of Michigan
Based on the two violations, each of which individually supports termination for cause, Moore is terminated effective immediately. He is not allowed to contact any University employees or student-athletes, and he cannot visit any Athletic Department facilities.
He is not eligible for rehire at the University of Michigan. All personal items were packed or mailed to him by Dec. 23. He was supposed to return any school-related items by Dec. 15. The letter ends, “We will be in communication to make arrangements to retrieve your dealer car.”
Supposed simpler terms:
Moore is fired on the spot for serious violations; each is justifiable enough to warrant his immediate removal. He is prevented from contacting any Michigan University employees or student-athletes and is not allowed on campus. The University will never rehire him. His belongings were handed over to him by Dec. 23, and he was asked to return all University property by Dec. 15. The university will arrange for him to return the University-issued dealer car.The letter is signed by Athletic Director Warde Manual.
Michigan Wolverines WR discloses shocking details about Sherrone Moore
On January 19, Derick Hutchinson of ClickOnDetroit reported that Anthony Simpson, a Michigan Wolverines wide receiver, claims Moore was blackmailed by teammates over his relationship with another staffer.
Simpson posted on X: "If I kept my mouth closed no one would know that I was apart of a scandal that impacted the team and impacted my chance to add to my production in college. Tried to stay at Michigan but the "GM" said there wasn't a roster spot for me. God has plans for us all and I can't wait to see where this journey takes me. Thank you Michigan [red heart and folded hands emojis]
Targets vs non targets I was the best slot receiver for Michigan and I was treated unfairly due to Sherrone Moore being Blackmailed by players and staff members. Which jeopardized my opportunity to get on the field. Fastest player on the team and I won reps everyday in practice. Only there for fall camp. Our team captains also advocated for me to play. I was denied fairness."
Sherrone Moore is innocent
Moore's attorney, Ellen Michaels, addressed media on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
"Mr. Moore is innocent of these charges," Michaels said. "Today, on behalf of Mr. Moore, we filed a motion to squash the arrest warrant and dismiss the complaint. We've requested that the court grant a Franks hearing because this warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as fact. We're confident the truth will come out in court, under oath, where it belongs. Mr. Moore and his family respectfully ask for your privacy."
