Sean McDermott stands up for Buffalo after controversial overtime interception as Bills’ season ends in Denver
Buffalo’s playoff loss to the Denver Broncos didn’t just sting because of the final score. It lingered because of one moment that changed everything. The Bills fell 33-30 in overtime at Mile High, ending another season with Super Bowl hopes left unfulfilled. But long after the clock hit zero, the focus shifted away from the scoreboard and over to a disputed interception that stopped what looked like a potential game-winning drive. It became the moment everyone talked about, both on the field and after it ended.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott was visibly frustrated afterward, not just with the ruling, but with how quickly it was handled. "It's hard for me to understand why it was ruled the way it was ruled," McDermott said. "If it is ruled that way, then why wasn't it slowed down just to make sure that we have this right. That would have made a lot of sense to me."
Referee Carl Cheffers later explained that Cooks did not complete the catch process and that McMillian finished it, which is why the interception stood. That explanation did little to calm McDermott, who made it clear his comments were about standing up for his team. "But I'm saying it because I'm standing up for Buffalo, damn it. I'm standing up for us," he said. "Because what went on is not how it should go down, in my estimation. These guys spend three hours out there playing football, pouring their guts out. To not even say, 'Hey, let's just slow this thing down.' That's why I'm bothered."
Around the league, opinions were split. Some analysts agreed with the call. Others felt the moment deserved more scrutiny. For the Bills, though, the outcome was final. After celebrating a rare road playoff win against Jacksonville days earlier, Buffalo’s season ended with another painful “what if.” And once again, the Bills were left wondering when things will finally break their way in January.

Controversial overtime call defines Buffalo’s playoff exit in Denver
Late in overtime, Josh Allen fired a deep pass to Brandin Cooks. Cooks appeared to secure the ball before hitting the ground, but Broncos cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian ripped it free at the same time. Officials ruled it an interception. The call was reviewed and upheld, allowing Denver to keep possession and eventually win on a Wil Lutz field goal.Bills head coach Sean McDermott was visibly frustrated afterward, not just with the ruling, but with how quickly it was handled.
