The New Orleans Saints are facing a significant setback as quarterback Derek Carr is expected to miss several games due to an oblique injury. This information was shared by NFL insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of the Saints’ 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, when Carr was hit on a crucial fourth-down play. His absence has left the team in a challenging position, as they have now dropped to a 2-3 record after a strong start to the season.

Derek Carr, who was leading the Saints to a strong start to the season, has been a vital part of their offense. His absence will undoubtedly be felt by the team, which has already been struggling to maintain its early-season momentum. With eight touchdown passes and four interceptions over five games, he has maintained a respectable quarterback rating of 63.6, ranking 10th in the league. However, his injury will now force the Saints to reevaluate their quarterback options for the upcoming games.
Despite Carr's efforts, the Saints’ offense has cooled off considerably after their early-season success. The team scored an impressive 91 points in their first two games, but their offensive production dwindled to just 67 points in the last three matchups. Monday night’s loss marked their third consecutive defeat, signaling a troubling trend as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
Carr's departure from the game also marked a significant career milestone, as he became only the 25th player in NFL history to surpass 40,000 passing yards. He had completed 18 of 28 passes for 165 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception before being replaced by Jake Haener, who managed to contribute 17 passing yards and an additional 11 rushing yards.
Carr is expected to miss the Saints' upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as their Week 7 showdown with the Denver Broncos, as reported by Garafolo and Rapoport. The Saints are likely to look to rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, a 2024 fifth-round pick, as a potential starter in Carr’s absence. Rattler, who previously played at Oklahoma and South Carolina, had a standout college career but was benched in favor of future star Caleb Williams before transferring to South Carolina.
As the Saints continue to adjust to life without their star quarterback, they must rely on Rattler and Haener to steer the team back on track before their playoff hopes begin to fade.
