Bears GM Ryan Poles Praises Coach Ben Johnson's High Football IQ

Ryan Poles has been vocal about his excitement in working alongside Ben Johnson. Describing their collaboration as “outstanding,” Poles highlighted Johnson's strategic mindset and attention to detail. "Everything that I learned about him through the interview process has played out really well in person as well," Poles stated at the NFL Combine. His remarks reflect the respect he has developed for Johnson's ability to thoughtfully construct his coaching staff, emphasizing team chemistry and diverse experiences. This strategic approach is anticipated to create a productive environment within the organization.

Johnson’s knack for clearly identifying and articulating his player requirements is seen as a crucial asset. Poles emphasized the significance of this clarity, noting, "You can't have like a prototype at every single position. But as a front office, we want to be as close as possible with that." This clear vision is expected to provide the Bears with a competitive advantage in free agency, enabling them to pursue players who align seamlessly with Johnson’s system. Poles further added, "I think the clearer the vision, the more aggressive you can be, and that's important," underscoring their readiness to capitalize on the upcoming free agency period.

Ben Johnson’s coaching journey has been marked by a remarkable offensive pedigree. During his tenure as the Offensive Coordinator for the Detroit Lions (2022-2024), Johnson orchestrated one of the league's most explosive offenses. In the 2024 season, the Lions averaged a franchise-record 409.5 yards per game and led the NFL in scoring with 32.4 points per game. His innovative play-calling helped the Lions secure a franchise-record 15 regular-season wins and a spot in the NFC Championship Game, solidifying his reputation as one of the brightest offensive minds in football.

Johnson's leadership was pivotal in the Lions' offensive resurgence. Under his guidance, the team consistently ranked in the top five in total offense, including a No. 2 finish in 2024. His offensive unit was known for its high football IQ, as Poles acknowledged, “You can just tell the high football IQ is on a totally different level than what I've seen and been a part of before.” This strategic brilliance is now expected to transform the Bears’ offense into a more dynamic and efficient unit.
