NEW DELHI: In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NFL, the Washington Commanders have officially parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera following the conclusion of a challenging 2023 season. The decision, announced by new team owner Josh Harris, comes after the Commanders finished with a 4-13 record, marking the worst season in Rivera's four-year tenure.

The announcement was made on Monday, with NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero first reporting the news. The Commanders' ownership has wasted no time in initiating the search for Rivera's successor, as they have already requested interviews with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn for the vacant head coaching position.

Rivera's departure was precipitated by an eight-game losing streak, which ultimately led to the team's decision to make a change at the coaching helm. The Commanders' disappointing season included a winless record (0-6) within the NFC East and a disheartening defeat to arch-rivals Dallas Cowboys.

Despite a turbulent season, Rivera expressed gratitude to the Washington fans for their unwavering support. In a statement, he acknowledged the disappointment of falling short of expectations and thanked the ownership group led by Josh Harris for their engagement and support throughout the challenging season.

In a significant reshuffle for the franchise, the Commanders are making notable additions off the field as well. Two-time NBA Executive of the Year Bob Myers, known for his role in building the Golden State Warriors dynasty, is set to join the organization. Additionally, former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman will take on a front-office role, according to reports.

Ron Rivera's tenure in Washington is marked by significant off-field challenges, including the transition to the Commanders branding and an ownership change that saw Daniel Snyder sell the franchise to Josh Harris. Rivera, a cancer survivor, has been a steady presence amid the tumultuous times.
