Rome Odunze injury update: Is Bears WR playing today vs. Rams?
The Chicago Bears head into their high-stakes NFC Divisional Round clash against the Los Angeles Rams with one major question hanging in the air: will wide receiver Rome Odunze be fit enough to play in the field?
Odunze is one of the Bears’ most important offensive weapons this season and he is officially listed as questionable due to a foot injury. While that tag has created some anxiety among fans, the overall signs point toward the young receiver suiting up on Sunday night.
Odunze has been dealing with a fracture in his foot that kept him sidelined for the final five games of the regular season. He made his return last week in the wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers, marking his first appearance since late November.
During the practice week leading up to the Rams game, he was limited in the first two sessions before returning as a full participant on Friday. That final full practice is often viewed as a positive indicator, even though the Bears still chose to list him as questionable on the injury report.
Speaking to the media earlier in the week, he made it clear that he expects to play and is prepared to push through the pain.
“There was soreness, but at this point of the season, it’s all hands on deck,” Odunze said. “I’ll ride it till the wheels fall off.”
While the expectation is that Odunze will be active, his workload could still be managed. In his return against the Packers, he played close to 70 percent of the Bears’ offensive snaps and finished with two catches for 44 yards. That included a crucial fourth-down reception late in the game, showing that head coach Matt Eberflus and quarterback Caleb Williams still trust him in big moments.
With another week of practice under his belt, there is a chance Odunze sees a slightly larger role against the Rams. However, Chicago has found success recently leaning on other options such as DJ Moore and tight end Colston Loveland, so Odunze may not immediately return to being the clear No. 1 target.
Before the injury, Odunze was one of the Bears’ most productive players. He finished the regular season with 44 receptions for 661 yards and six touchdowns in just 12 games, leading the team in scoring catches. His ability to stretch the field and win contested balls adds a different dimension to the Bears’ offense.
Against a Rams defense that will be focused on stopping the run and pressuring Williams, having Odunze on the field even at less than 100 percent could be a difference-maker.
As of now there is no official confirmation from the Bears, but all indications suggest that Rome Odunze will play tonight against the Los Angeles Rams. Fans should expect him to be active, though possibly with a monitored snap count, as Chicago looks to book a place in the NFC Championship Game.
