Long before postgame celebrations and Super Bowl confetti, he learned to treat his NFL earnings as something fragile. That thinking still defines how he talks about money today. During a recent podcast appearance, Gronkowski addressed the long-running claim head-on. He said the rumor is “technically” true and traced the habit back to his first agent payment. “You've got to pay him back over the time, the first 50 grand you made,” Gronkowski explained. “I actually took that 50 grand and I bought me a car, I paid for my spot up in New England, actually, with it.”


That early lesson stuck. Even as a four-time Super Bowl champion, Gronkowski lived modestly and avoided lifestyle inflation. “I didn't know how long the NFL was gonna last,” Gronkowski continued. “I was a second round pick, so it was like a four-year, $4 million deal, and I was like, if I can play this contract out, I'll be set for life.”

His definition of security was simple and personal, not flashy. “I just always wanted to save it, and I just used my money that I was getting off the field to just spend it on whatever I needed to spend it on. Technically, I have not spent any of my NFL money.” That approach allowed him to separate earnings from identity and prepare for life beyond football.

Since retiring in 2022, Gronkowski has moved smoothly into broadcasting at Fox Sports alongside familiar faces, including Tom Brady and Julian Edelman. Away from the studio, he continues to balance a packed schedule with longtime partner Camille Kostek, who recently described his post-NFL life as busy but fulfilling. The pattern remains clear. Gronkowski plans ahead, stays grounded.
