Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield didn't shy away from responding to a controversial act by Texas defensive players following the Longhorns' victory over the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry. After the game, Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell planted a Texas flag through Mayfield's Oklahoma jersey at midfield.

Mayfield expressed that he has been on the minds of Texas players for years, saying, "Just a kid from Austin, Texas that went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games and being rent free in their heads for almost a decade."


The two Longhorns players had made it a point to showcase their dominance on the field by placing Mayfield’s iconic No. 6 jersey at the 50-yard line and planting the Texas flag right through it. The symbolic gesture was a direct response to Oklahoma’s past actions, with Hill Jr. stating that it felt like a fitting payback. He said, "I’d seen all the stuff they (Oklahoma) posted last year, so I felt like it was right for me to get a little touch of something on them."

Mayfield, on the other hand, holds fond memories of his Red River Showdown victories, particularly his 2016 triumph, when the Sooners edged out Texas 45-40. The image of him donning the iconic golden cowboy hat and running across the field with the Oklahoma flag remains etched in the minds of many. He cherished the moment, reflecting, "It's special to me. Very special. I've been waiting a long time to actually come away with a win against these guys." His consecutive victories in 2016 and 2017, including a thrilling 59-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Mark Andrews, solidified his legacy in this intense rivalry.
