Pittsburgh also wants teams to arrange travel once terms are agreed.


Tom Pelissero reported on X in March 2026 that this rule allows players to speak directly with coaches rather than only through agents. That shift matters. A direct call can build trust quickly. It can also influence decisions when contract offers look close.

His post reads, “A subtle but significant change when the NFL’s free agent negotiating window opens Monday: For the first time, clubs may conduct one video or phone call (maximum 1 hour) with up to five free agents, rather than communicating strictly through their agents as in past years.”

Earlier, players stayed out of these talks. Agents handled everything. Now teams like Pittsburgh can make a stronger, more personal pitch. That could help them in key positions where they need depth, especially at wide receiver.

At the same time, Cleveland has gone even bigger. The Browns proposed allowing teams to trade draft picks up to five seasons in advance. NFL Football Operations confirmed the proposal on March 18, 2026.
