Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, he challenged the growing belief that a deal is already quietly lined up. Instead, he painted a picture of patience, rules, and several unanswered questions that could shape how this situation unfolds.

“New England’s been through a lot with the league in recent years, you know, Deflategate, other things,” Schefter said in the McAfee interview. “They’re not going to bend the rules and take chances and do handshake deals under the table.”


That point matters more than it seems. The Patriots have spent years rebuilding their image after controversies like Deflategate, and operating within league guidelines is no longer optional. It is part of their identity now. Any suggestion of an under-the-table arrangement simply does not align with how the franchise is currently run.

Just as important is the timeline. Schefter noted that the Philadelphia Eagles are “not in a rush” to move Brown. If anything happens, it is expected to come after June 1, when salary cap mechanics make a deal more practical. That delay introduces a layer of uncertainty for New England.

“A lot of people have connected the Patriots (to Brown),” Schefter said. “That’s a logical landing spot. But what we don’t know is what’s going to happen with New England from now until June 1.”

And that window could change everything. The Patriots are not standing still. They have options, and they are exploring them. A reunion with Stefon Diggs remains on the table. The draft offers another path, especially with prospects like KC Concepcion already on their radar. Each move chips away at the urgency to pursue Brown.

There is also the matter of cost. Acquiring a three-time Pro Bowler rarely comes cheap. Any deal would likely require significant assets, and that price may not align with how the Patriots want to build around young quarterback Drake Maye. His rapid rise has changed expectations, but it has also increased the importance of smart roster construction rather than splashy moves.
