The New England Patriots made one of the most intriguing moves in this year’s free agency by securing veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs on a lucrative three-year, $69 million contract. The deal, which includes $26 million in guaranteed money, marks a significant investment in rebuilding the team’s offensive firepower. For a franchise that has struggled to find consistency at the wide receiver position, Diggs arrives as a much-needed addition to an offense that will be built around rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
Mike Vrabel breaks down why Stefon Diggs is the right fit for the New England Patriots
Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, suffered a torn ACL during the 2024 season while playing for the Houston Texans. Despite that setback, the Patriots saw enough value in his skill set and experience to bring him in as a primary target for their young quarterback. With ample cap space available, New England didn’t hesitate to make a move, betting on Diggs' ability to return to form and deliver elite production.
Head coach Mike Vrabel has expressed optimism about Diggs’ impact on the team. While speaking with former NFL defensive end Chris Long on his podcast, Vrabel detailed why the Patriots aggressively pursued the former Buffalo Bills star.
"Just trying to make sure we're supporting Drake and supporting the football team," Vrabel said. "This is a highly-competitive, confident receiver that's produced throughout his career. In multiple ways. Play style, he's got a play strength to him that you see, that he can play physical. You know, route craft. Good at the catch point, been good in the red zone.
"There's a play style to him that I've always appreciated and that we want to continue to enhance and make sure that he's doing things to help us. His conversation, his demeanor, his attitude, and his presence have been great through our conversations and hopefully we can continue to add good players."
The Patriots’ struggles at wide receiver in recent years have been well-documented. Since Julian Edelman’s retirement, the team has lacked a reliable playmaker capable of consistently creating separation and making big plays. Diggs, who has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in six different seasons, presents a major upgrade. Even in 2024, before his injury, he was on pace for another solid season with the Texans, recording 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns in just eight games.
For Maye, having a veteran target like Diggs could accelerate his development and provide a level of stability in the passing game that has been missing in Foxborough. Diggs’ route-running prowess and ability to make contested catches should make him an instant go-to option, especially in crucial third-down and red-zone situations.
Diggs’ return to the AFC East also adds another layer of intrigue. After spending four successful seasons with the Buffalo Bills, he will now face his former team twice a year, reigniting a rivalry that will have plenty of personal stakes. His most productive season came in 2020 with Buffalo, when he led the league with 127 receptions for 1,535 yards. The Patriots are hoping he can replicate that kind of success in their system.
While there are concerns about his recovery from the ACL injury and his age (31), the Patriots remain confident that he will be ready for Week 1 of the 2025 season. If Diggs returns to full strength, he has the potential to be one of the most impactful signings of the offseason. With his experience, skillset, and a chip on his shoulder, he will look to prove that he still has plenty left in the tank.
