Fans split over what the Patrick Mahomes’ smile meant

As the Denver Broncos sealed a late touchdown in their Christmas Day win at Arrowhead Stadium, the broadcast cut to Patrick Mahomes watching from the suite. The Chiefs’ franchise quarterback, sidelined after season-ending ACL surgery, appeared to smile as the Broncos celebrated.

It did not take long for the clip to ignite debate. Within minutes, it was circulating widely on social media, becoming a lightning rod for frustration, defence, and interpretation. The reaction was swift and deeply divided.



Some fans were quick to defend him. One supporter wrote, “As much as I hate Mahomes and the Chiefs, that’s definitely not a smile of him being happy - more like a ‘what a joke’ smile.” Others echoed that view, suggesting the expression reflected disbelief or gallows humour rather than satisfaction.



Not everyone was willing to extend that benefit of the doubt. Another commenter took a harsher tone, saying, “Yeah, Mahomes doesn’t have what it takes to win. Chiefs need to focus on finding a franchise QB if they want any chance of winning a championship.” The remark drew pushback, given Mahomes’ resume, but it underscored how raw emotions have become during a lost year.



Several users stepped in to defend the quarterback’s legacy. “Oh relax,” one fan posted. “As if this guy hasn’t played hurt multiple times and won multiple Super Bowls. There’s obviously another explanation for this, not that you’d care to find out.”

Everything is worse when you lose a season.

Kansas City has had a hard time finding its identity or getting things going without their quarterback. Every loss since Mahomes' injury has been worse, and every camera angle has been looked at more closely.
