Patrick Mahomes’s Strong Reaction As WR Xavier Worthy Gets Flagged For Disorderly Conduct

The Kansas City Chiefs started scoring early in their Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers but got into some minor trouble. Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and the Chiefs went up 6-0. But shortly after the Chiefs were hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for some of his gestures. And Mahomes himself needed to have a word with the referee to get to the bottom of the confusion.

Worthy and his teammate Isiah Pacheco seemed to be celebrating with a cheeky Christmas-themed gag where Worthy was seen putting presents in bags and Isiah Pacheco was miming like he was catching them. He then put the bag of gifts over his shoulder and ran away in a cheeky way resembling the Grinch.


It was shortly after this that the Chiefs were hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Although netizens were surprised at the referees’ reaction, a replay from the Netflix broadcast showed a different angle to the action between the players.


In the replay Worthy could be seen lifting up the side of his jersey, to make a joke about supposedly carrying a weapon. The NFL has been big on flagging weapons-related celebrations and that’s probably what earned Worthy unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.




Though fans were shocked that Worthy earned the penalty simply because of his Christmas-y act, most of them did make sense of the referee’s actions in the light of NFL’s rules.


The Chiefs have had struggles all season but still had a 14-1 record as they entered Week 17 to face the Steelers. Worthy has been an asset for the team as he had 51 catches for 559 yards and five touchdown catches this season. He also has three rushing touchdowns. Last week, Worthy had seven catches for 65 yards and a touchdown catch against the Houston Texans.




Chiefs are the two-time reigning Super Bowl champs and during the Christmas Day game, they snagged a 29-10 victory at Acrisure Stadium. After the game, Kansas City celebrated the win with festive flare, as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce received special Christmas jackets and cake-filled game balls from Netflix.


The biggest surprise though was head coach Andy Reid, who dressed up as Santa Claus to give the locker room speech. "I'm proud of you dudes," Reid told his team. "For your present, you get home-field advantage."
