How Pat Mahomes Sr.’s struggles and predictions shaped Patrick’s Super Bowl journey

Week 7 is here, and it’s a rematch of last year’s finalists: Chiefs vs. 49ers. But before we dive into the game, here’s a fascinating story from just before last year’s Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes Sr., not only served as his son’s trainer and mentor growing up, but he’s also battled personal demons, particularly addiction.

In February 2024, Pat Mahomes Sr. was arrested for DWI, and what he told the officers was quite unexpected. He confidently claimed that if they arrested him, the Chiefs would lose the Super Bowl. His exact words were, “Are y’all serious? I’m supposed to be going to the Super Bowl to watch my son play football, and this is what we’re doing?”

The incident occurred in Tyler, Texas, when police stopped his SUV for an invalid registration. During the stop, Mahomes Sr. admitted to having two beers and even offered one to the officers. A beer can sat in the cup holder, and a breathalyzer later revealed a BAC of 0.23. Despite this off-field drama, Patrick Mahomes didn’t let it faze him, leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.

Fate gave him the chance to witness his son prove him wrong. Released before the Super Bowl on February 11, Pat watched as Patrick Mahomes secured his third championship. His bold claims now seemed far-fetched, but he must have felt some pride in the victory. Pat Mahomes later received a five-year probation sentence.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes vs. 49ers’ Brock Purdy: Who will come out on top in Week 7?

The 49ers have had a rollercoaster season, standing at 3 wins and 3 losses. Quarterback Brock Purdy has completed 121 of 185 passes (65.4%) for 1,629 yards and 9 touchdowns, but his rushing game—26 carries for 127 yards—has yet to produce a score. After a Week 6 win over the Seahawks, they’re brimming with confidence.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are enjoying an undefeated season, energized after their Week 6 bye. While Patrick Mahomes may trail in stats, his precision has been spot-on, completing 111 of 169 passes for 6 touchdowns in 5 games. His rushing efforts have been modest, with 23 carries for 83 yards.

Both teams are gearing up for this much-anticipated showdown. For the Chiefs, it's a chance to prove their dominance, while for the 49ers, it’s a shot at revenge. Who will come out on top? We'll know soon.
