Patrick Mahomes II did not need a long breakdown. He saw the clip, hit send, and summed up what most people were thinking.
During the Chicago Bears’ 20-17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round on Sunday night, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams pulled off a fourth-down throw that instantly took over the internet. Minutes later, Mahomes reacted on X with “ awesome!” as the play bounced across timelines. (Mahomes’ post came Jan. 19.)
The throw was real. So was the ending. Williams forced overtime with a miracle. Then the Bears watched the season end anyway.
Caleb Williams’ 4th-and-4 escape and heave forced overtime and made Patrick Mahomes hit send
Chicago trailed 17-10 late in regulation and faced 4th-and-4 in the red zone with under half a minute left. The Rams brought pressure. Williams backpedaled hard, drifting from around the 14-yard line all the way toward the 40, then launched a pass to the back of the end zone.
Tight end Cole Kmet came down with it for a touchdown, and the clip went everywhere. The NFL’s official account posted the highlight with the callout “NO WAY. CALEB WILLIAMS HEAVES IT ON 4TH DOWN.” The reaction wave was immediate, and Mahomes’ response became one of the cleanest receipts of the moment: “ awesome!”
That is the Mahomes part of this story. Not because he played in it, but because he is one of the few quarterbacks whose name people use as shorthand for “that should not be possible.” When a throw looks like it belongs in a Mahomes montage, the internet tags Mahomes. This time, Mahomes tagged the moment back.
The Bears got the highlight, but the Rams got the win after a late interception and Harrison Mevis field goal
The problem for Chicago is the throw did not finish the job. After the touchdown forced overtime, Williams later tried to hit D.J. Moore downfield. Rams defensive back Kamren Curl intercepted it, swinging field position and control.
Los Angeles turned that takeaway into points. Kicker Harrison Mevis drilled a short field goal to seal a 20-17 win, ending Chicago’s playoff run despite the late heroics.
Mahomes watched it all from home. One report from MARCA said he has been rehabbing after suffering knee ligament tears Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers. A separate PFSN note said Mahomes suffered an ACL tear late in the regular season. Either way, his team was not in the postseason, and his reaction to Williams was pure fan mode: short, loud, and very online.
