Nick Bolton's Potential Move to Cincinnati Bengals Spells Trouble for Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs face a tough decision with reliable linebacker Nick Bolton, whose potential move to Cincinnati Bengals may significantly boost an AFC rival. Bolton, valued at $49 million over four years, could be an ideal replacement for Germaine Pratt, adding substantial strength to the Bengals' defense if they secure him.

The Kansas City Chiefs have some tough decisions to make this offseason, and one of them involves linebacker Nick Bolton. He’s been one of the most reliable players on their defense, but now there’s talk that he could be on his way out. And not just anywhere—to the Cincinnati Bengals.
If that happens, it’s not just a hit for Kansas City; it’s a major boost for one of their biggest AFC rivals.

Nick Bolton’s Potential Exit and the Challenges Ahead for the Kansas City Chiefs

Nick Bolton has been the definition of dependable for the Chiefs. In three of his four seasons, he’s racked up more than 100 tackles. He’s a true three-down linebacker, someone who can read the field, make plays in coverage, and stop the run. Those kinds of players don’t come cheap.
Spotrac estimates Bolton’s market value at around $49 million over four years, and that’s where things get tricky for Kansas City. They’re not exactly in a position to hand out big contracts right now, and if they can’t find a way to make the numbers work, they might have to let him walk.

That’s where the Bengals come in. CBS Sports' Jordan Dajani has already floated the idea that Cincinnati could be a top contender for Bolton, and Sporting News' Jacob Camenker backed it up.
"Here's another move where an AFC contender gets better at the expense of the Chiefs," Camenker wrote. "Bolton has been a productive, three-down linebacker for Kansas City, eclipsing 100 tackles in three of his four seasons and logging career-best marks in sacks (3) and pass defenses (6) in 2024. The Bengals need a three-down linebacker to replace Germaine Pratt, who requested a trade, and soon-to-be 25-year-old Bolton would be a core building block in Al Golden's defense."
It makes sense. The Bengals need help at linebacker, and if Pratt is on his way out, Bolton would be an ideal replacement. The fact that he’s still only 24 makes him even more valuable—he’s not just a short-term fix, he’s a player they could build around for years.
Losing Bolton wouldn’t just be inconvenient—it would be a real problem. In four seasons, he’s totaled 458 tackles, four interceptions, and five sacks, and the Chiefs' defense is built around players like him who can step up in big moments. Letting him go would leave a major hole in the middle of that unit, one they might struggle to fill.
For the Bengals, though, this is the kind of move that could change the dynamic of their defense. Pairing Bolton with Logan Wilson would give them one of the best linebacker duos in the conference. That’s not something the Chiefs—or anyone else in the AFC—want to deal with.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but the possibility of Bolton leaving is very real. The Chiefs have to decide whether he’s worth the investment or if they’re willing to let him go and hope they can replace him. Either way, this is a situation to watch closely—because if Bolton does end up in Cincinnati, it could come back to haunt Kansas City in a big way.
