The 2026 NFL offseason has already thrown one of its most complicated storylines into the spotlight. Veteran wide receiver Tyreek Hill is back on the open market after his release from the Miami Dolphins on Feb. 16, 2026. Since then, speculation has grown across the league about where the former All-Pro could land next.


Now two familiar AFC contenders have entered the conversation. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers have both surfaced in NFL free-agency chatter after reports and online discussions linked them to the veteran receiver. With Hill still unsigned, teams continue to monitor his recovery and weigh the risk of adding one of the league’s most explosive playmakers.

Kansas City Chiefs and LAChargers emerge in free-agency chatter around WR Tyreek Hill

The speculation began to circulate widely after an NFL Rumours social media post in March 2026 claimed that the Chargers and Chiefs both had interest in Hill. While no deal discussions have been confirmed publicly, the connection is not hard to understand.


The Kansas City Chiefs remain the most natural storyline. Hill spent six seasons in Kansas City after the franchise drafted him in 2016. During that stretch, he formed one of the NFL’s most dangerous passing combinations with quarterback Patrick Mahomes under head coach Andy Reid.

Hill produced 6,630 receiving yards and 56 touchdowns with Kansas City and helped the franchise win Super Bowl LIV in February 2020. Because of that history, every free-agency rumor naturally pulls the Chiefs back into the conversation.

Hill even fueled the speculation himself during a media interaction on February 24, 2026, in Kansas City. When reporters asked him about playing environments, he answered with a line that quickly spread across NFL circles. “Indoor is nice, obviously if it’s cold, but I like to be outdoors. Any day of the week, man. Especially in Arrowhead Stadium.”

Tyreek Hill made the comment while speaking to local reporters during an offseason training appearance in Kansas City on February 24.

The Chargers present a different angle. Los Angeles currently holds one of the league’s largest salary-cap cushions, reportedly close to $100 million entering the 2026 offseason. That flexibility gives the front office room to chase veteran playmakers to help quarterback Justin Herbert.

Injury recovery and contract history complicate Tyreek Hill’s market

Despite the buzz, Tyreek Hill’s situation remains far from simple. His availability hinges on health. During the 2025 season, Hill suffered a knee dislocation in Week 4 and later underwent surgery for a torn ACL. The injury ended his season and created major uncertainty around his 2026 timeline.


His contract situation also played a role in Miami’s decision. Hill had signed a three-year, $90 million reworked extension with the Dolphins in August 2024. However, his 2026 cap hit reportedly climbed above $51 million with no guaranteed money remaining.


According to Spotrac’s financial breakdown, Miami faced a March guarantee trigger on $16 million of Hill’s 2026 salary. The Dolphins released him early, clearing roughly $22.8 million in cap space while absorbing $28.25 million in dead money. For now, Hill remains unsigned. Teams want medical clarity before committing serious money.

Still, interest from teams like the Chiefs and Chargers shows the intrigue remains strong. Even at 32, and coming off a serious knee injury, the former All-Pro still brings game-breaking speed that very few receivers in NFL history have matched.
