In a heartwarming display of solidarity, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield have announced a joint initiative to support relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Helene. The two quarterbacks, who are set to face off in a Thursday Night Football matchup, have pledged to donate $50,000 to Team Rubicon.
"They have volunteers on the frontlines getting their hands dirty, getting involved to do all the work that it takes to clean up," Cousins said in a video posted to his X account.
Added Mayfield: "Their dedicated volunteers are working tirelessly to assist those in need, ensuring that help will be able to reach every single corner of the affected areas."
The storm, which struck as a Category 4 hurricane, devastated parts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, leaving a staggering death toll of 215, with many more injured and displaced.
In addition to individual efforts from Mayfield and Cousins, the NFL is contributing $8 million to the ongoing relief operations. This significant donation includes contributions from several teams, including the Falcons, Panthers, Texans, and Buccaneers, as well as the NFL Foundation. Hurricane Helene left its mark on both Mayfield’s home state of Florida and Cousins’ Georgia, as well as other parts of the Southeast. In light of this, the two athletes have used their platforms to encourage fans to make donations, pointing them toward Team Rubicon’s website for further contributions.
As Cousins and Mayfield prepare to face off on Thursday Night Football, their focus is not just on winning an NFC South matchup, but also on supporting the recovery efforts of the regions they call home. The upcoming game between the 2-2 Falcons and the 3-1 Buccaneers will be a pivotal moment for both teams, but their off-field collaboration in aid of Hurricane Helene relief shows that their greatest victory may lie in their shared compassion.
