NEW DELHI: Running back Damien Harris, known for his tenure with both the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills, announced his retirement from professional football on Monday. The decision marks the end of a career that spanned four seasons with the Patriots and one with the Bills.
Originally drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Harris went on to become a free agent after his one-year contract with the Bills concluded. Reflecting on his journey in a heartfelt Instagram post, Harris expressed gratitude for the opportunities football had afforded him.
"Getting to represent the name on the back of my jersey on and off the field, getting to compete at the highest level with and against the best competitors while winning championships and being coached by the 2 greatest head coaches of all time in Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are all just a small part of what God has done in my life with the game of football," Harris wrote.
Acknowledging the significance of gratitude, Harris emphasized his appreciation for the experiences and relationships forged throughout his career. Despite stepping away from the game he loves, he expressed gratitude for the strength to make this decision.
Throughout his career, Harris amassed impressive statistics, totaling 2,188 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 42 receptions for 297 yards. His standout season came in 2021, where he showcased his prowess with 15 touchdowns and 929 rushing yards.
However, Harris's final season with the Bills was marred by injury. Despite appearing in six games and scoring a touchdown, he suffered a neck sprain during a game against the New York Giants in Week 6. The incident, which evoked memories of Bills safety Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest the previous year, ultimately led to Harris missing the remainder of the season.
As Harris bids farewell to the NFL, his retirement marks the end of a chapter filled with both triumphs and challenges, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by fans and teammates alike.
