The NFL offseason has begun to take shape with important events like the Combine and free agency set to come soon.From roster decisions in Green Bay to draft momentum around top prospects, several storylines are drawing attention across the league.

One of the biggest discussions involves roster reshuffling due to salary-cap pressure, while draft evaluations are beginning to influence how teams plan their long-term strategies.

Packers expected to make tough call on Elgton Jenkins

The Green Bay Packers may be heading toward a major financial decision involving two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins. Reports suggest he is widely expected to be released before free agency begins.



Jenkins's cap hit for the 2026 season is more than $24 million, which is hard to explain since he moved to center last season and got hurt at the conclusion of the season in 2025. If they let him go before June 1, they may save over $20 million in cap space. This would give the Packers more options for filling other needs, like adding depth to the defense and help in the secondary.

His performance in the last season has also contributed to the uncertainty. While he has been valued for his versatility across the offensive line, analysts noted a decline in both run-blocking and pass-protection metrics over the past two seasons. With younger options already on the roster and Jordan Love leading the offense, the team appears focused on reallocating resources.

Ty Simpson tied to first-round chatter ahead of NFL Combine

Meanwhile, draft conversations are intensifying, particularly around Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Analysts believe the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine could determine whether Simpson secures first-round status.



Simpson is widely viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects behind Indiana signal-caller Fernando Mendoza. His 2025 season which included over 3,500 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and only five interceptions has strengthened his case.

However, Simpson was a one-year starter and does not possess the physical profile some teams prefer. Because the 2026 quarterback class is considered relatively thin, evaluators believe a strong Combine performance could significantly boost his draft position.

League rule changes

Away from roster and draft news, the NFL Competition Committee is not anticipating major rule adjustments this offseason. Officials have indicated the game is in a stable place, with only minor proposals expected.



Notably, controversial topics from previous years including discussions around banning the “tush push” play are not currently expected to result in formal rule changes. Instead, the focus will remain on technical clarifications such as pass interference interpretations and game-flow adjustments.

With free agency just weeks away, more clarity is expected soon making the coming period one of the most consequential stretches of the NFL calendar.
