NFL insider reveals why Trevon Diggs was released; fans call out Cowboys’ ‘cold’ move
It’s no secret that Dallas Cowboys Cornerback Trevon Diggs was released by the team in a shock move. Diggs had indeed been an inconsistent performer thanks to his injuries and his communication issues during the game, but fans were quite shocked by Dallas’ decision, especially since Trevon is unanimously considered a promising athlete, despite his history.
And now, an NFL insider has shared that Diggs’ exit or rather his layoff, has to do with a personal request he made to spend time with his family. Jordan Schultz, who’s an NFL insider, wrote on X that after the Christmas game, Diggs requested that head coach Brian Schottenheimer stay in Washington for the holiday, as he’s from the area and his family stays there. But he was denied and was eventually let go.
“My understanding of the Trevon Diggs situation is this: after the #Cowboys finished their Christmas game vs. the Commanders, Diggs requested with HC Brian Schottenheimer to stay in Washington for the holiday since he’s from the area and his family stays there. Players often ask for — and are usually granted — additional family time during the holidays if the schedule makes sense (Dallas played Thursday),” Jordan wrote.
He further added, “Schotty denied the request. Diggs again said he wanted to be with his family and that if he went back to Dallas, he’d just be flying right back on the first flight out, especially with players having several days off. The team vehemently denied his request again.”
“And then today, the team released him. Diggs is healthy and ready to join a new team for the playoffs.”
Experts have noted that Diggs has visibly struggled on the field over the last few days, even when healthy, as he has surrendered completions and been involved in several coverage breakdowns caused by miscommunication.
However, it’s possible that the decision to let Diggs go was not because of one big reason, but rather a buildup of concerns over time, including on-field performance and other factors.
Trevon himself took to Instagram to share the news and expressed gratitude to fans. “I want to thank the Dallas Cowboys organization for the opportunity they gave me and for changing my life, both on and off the field. I’ll always be grateful for what my time here meant for me and my family.”
“I want to thank all the coaches and staff who believed in me, pushed me, and helped me grow as a player and as a man. I’m thankful for the relationships and brotherhood I built in that locker room—those bonds will always mean a lot to me.”
“With that said, I’m excited for a new journey and a fresh start. I’m motivated, focused, and ready for what’s next,” he continued.
He added, “To the fans who supported me throughout this journey, you are truly appreciated. Thank you for the love and support along the way. God is great”
